Facial blemishes are an unsightly problem for both men and women. According to the University of Alabama, 43 percent of men in their 20s suffer from acne. While the treatments to eliminate blemishes are generally the same for both men and women, there are some major differences for men. Daily tasks such as shaving can further irritate the skin, thus exacerbating skin blemishes. The key to fighting the blemishes is persistence and using the proper skin-care regimen.
Wash your face in the morning and at night with a skin wash containing a 5 percent solution of benzoyl peroxide. Apply a dime-sized amount to your palm, and massage it over all areas of your face using a circular motion. Rinse your face thoroughly using cold water to remove all traces of the solution, and then pat your skin dry using a towel.
Apply a blemish cream containing benzoyl peroxide once per day, preferably at night. Spread the cream over the affected area in a thin layer. Avoid touching your face or putting on clothing until the cream is dry. Benzoyl peroxide gets deep into the pores and helps regenerate them faster, thus eliminating the blockage that creates blemishes.
Exfoliate the skin once per week to remove any dead skin cells and prevent them from developing into blemishes. Apply a dime-sized amount of a mild facial scrub in your hand. Massage it over the skin gently in circular motions for 60 seconds. Rinse your face thoroughly with cold water, and pat your skin dry with a towel.

Tips
- Shaving can cause a condition called folliculitis, which is an infection around the hair follicle. Although this may resemble a blemish, it is actually much different. If you see a hair growing in the center of the blemish, you actually have folliculitis. Switching to an electric razor usually solves the problem.
- If your skin begins to peel or flake after using the benzoyl peroxide treatments, begin applying them every other day instead of daily.
- It may take six to eight weeks before you see the effects of treatment.
- If your blemishes get worse or do not clear up with over-the-counter treatments, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist who can prescribe stronger treatments.
Warnings
- Do not squeeze blemishes, since this can spread the infection over a larger area or cause the initial blemish to get worse.
